Drinking and Alcohol

Drinking and Alcohol

In the UK you are not allowed to buy alcohol until you are 18 although you are allowed to drink with a meal in licensed premises from the age of 16, if an adult buys it (you can buy your own with a meal in Scotland at 16). Parents are allowed to give their children small amounts of alcohol at home but, in the UK, it is illegal to give any alcohol to a child under 5 years old. (See Wikipedia for a fascinating comparison of alcohol age limits throughout the world).

In a university lifestyle, there can be elements of drinking and alcohol included. For some it may be a regular occurrence, others something that does not concern them. For more information on drink awareness and the welfare implications that my come attached to it, please use the link below or contact your Welfare Officer.

It is always important to keep in mind the impacts that alcohol can have. Make sure that you have a great time at university and that alcohol does not have a negative impact. Make sure that you drink responsibility if you do drink in your time here. Newman Students' Union supports and promotes safe and responsible drinking.
