Hi. I’m Poppie and I’m in my 3rd year studying Counselling, Mental Health And Wellbeing. I am running for the position of Union Chair.
Having faced adversity and significant challenges throughout my personal and professional life, I feel as though I am well-placed to relate to certain struggles students may be facing. As a result, I wish to be given the opportunity to provide the wisdom, knowledge and support to help students grow, flourish and succeed during their time at Newman.
During my second year, I had the pleasure of representing students by being the Academic Representation Officer for the SU. As a result, this has given me a particular insite into how the Union operates and the exceptional hard work, commitment and dedication that goes into ensuring that Newman students have the best experience possible during their time here. Consequently, this has further inspired me to continue collaborating with my amazing SU colleagues and enhance my professional development and experience.
With this in mind, my aim is to implement the following promises during my time in office:
Promise 1: Collaboration
I will work with my fellow SU colleagues to ensure that Newman students have the best experience possible whilst studying at university. I will work with our President, Vice-President and Union Director to chair certain meetings held within or surrounding the Union. If I am elected as Union Chair, I will work closely with our President to enhance the Voice And Support Committee, one of the two sub-committees listed under the newly-formed Student Council. I will assist in acting as chair for specific Union meetings such as Student Council, Annual General Meeting (AGM)or any other meetings which the Union deems appropriate.
Promise 2: Support
I will support Union staff and Newman students alike in order to create an inclusive and flourishing university environment. For instance, I will assist our President with her pledge to provide a weekly “cuppa and chat” for students. Furthermore, I will enable students to embrace their full potential whilst studying at Newman.
