Here at Newman Students’ Union we aspire to truly represent the diversity of our membership, advocate for change, and call out injustice wherever it exists. We do this throughout the year by running campaigns on topics that you care about the most.
This year we are passionate about working on EDI projects with students to envoke change around the University to make sure that your University and University journey suits YOU!
In the past, things we have campaigned and lobbied the University for are:
The University to provide free sanitary products across campus for all staff and students that menstruate.
For the last few years, the Students Union provided free sanitary products on campus however, after the power of the student voice, this year sanitary products are being paid for and provided by the University. Here at Newman Students' Union we do not believe that sanitary products are a luxury and we want our institution to have them on hand whenever anyone should need them!
The University to provide portable hearing loops for departments to have.
A hearing loop (sometimes called an audio induction loop) is a special type of sound system for use by people with hearing aids. The hearing loop provides a magnetic, wireless signal that is picked up by the hearing aid when it is set to ‘T’ (Telecoil) setting. Hearing loop systems provide easy access to high-quality audio, helping to ensure that people with hearing loss have inclusive and equal access to intelligible sound. Not every room in the University either has a hearing loop or is able to have one in because they are not able to be too close to eachother. Along with this, open spaces such as Reception, SU Office and Starbucks don't have them either. We hope that having these portable hearing loops available for students to use in open spaces and also for them to borrow if they are in a room without one is massively beneficial for our students.
